Why is Private Sale Becoming So Popular?
Figures from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) suggest that around 1 in 10 homeowners now sell their property privately, while figures from the Alliance and Leicester suggest the number is more than 1 in 7.
What's more, the OFT found that 91% of private sellers reported that the whole process ran smoothly and that most would do it again. In contrast, consumer magazine Which? found that 50% of sellers using an estate agent were unhappy with the service they received.
The reason for the growth in private sale is that recent developments in the online property market have led to a permanent shift in power and control away from estate agents and towards individual sellers:
Individual sellers now have FREE access to marketing tools that are the same as (and in many cases better than) those used by estate agents.
These tools allow sellers to reach millions of Buyers locally and nationally without having to pay thousands in commission.
Not only this, individual sellers can now access valuation tools that weren't even available to professionals just a few years ago. For private sellers, at least, the days of estate agents selling homes for less than they are worth for a quick sale are over.
